Required courses for 2016-2018

Employees attending training in a computer lab

We recognize that mandatory training may feel like a chore to many NIH employees. But not to worry! EDI is focused on providing high-quality, interesting online content through the NIH Learning Management System to assist you in meeting your EDI mandatory requirements. Currently, there are two EDI mandatory trainings required for NIH employees:

  1. NoFEAR Act Training – Required within 90 calendar days for new NIH employees and every two years for all employees.
  2. Sexual Harassment Prevention for NIH Managers – Required every two years.
Sexual Harassment Prevention for NIH Employees – Required every two years.

In addition, some learners prefer in-person instruction. So we offer live EEO Compliance Training for both managers and supervisors, as well as EEO Training for employees. Participants in this live training will satisfy BOTH of the mandatory training requirements listed above! You get two for one for spending time with EDI!

Where does the mandate for EDI training come from?

In short – it’s the law. On May 15, 2002, Congress enacted Public Law 107-174, “Notification and Federal Employee Antidiscrimination and Retaliation Act of 2002,” commonly referred to as the NoFEAR Act. This law requires each federal agency to train all federal employees biennially, or every two years, and all new employees within 90 days of arriving at the Agency. In addition, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) provided guidance, following the Supreme Court’s landmark decisions in the 1998 Faragher and Ellerth sexual harassment case and subsequent court decisions, explicitly requiring or encouraging all employers to provide sexual harassment prevention training.
