Women and Minorities Underrepresented in STEM
Did you know that women make up nearly half of the American workforce, but only 26% of science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) jobs?
Or, that Blacks hold 11% of the workforce, but just 6% of STEM occupations?
Or, that Hispanics make up nearly 15% of the workforce but hold 7% of similar positions?
This data, taken from the Census Bureau, is highlighted in an article published by the New York Times Editorial Board in December 2013. The article discusses some of key reasons why women and minorities are still significantly underrepresented in STEM occupations, and links this lack of representation to national concerns including income inequality between whites and other groups, and between women and men.
