From the EDI Director: 2020 AAPI Month
The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is pleased to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Each May, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) commemorates the vast history, scientific contributions, and achievements across the many cultures that make up AAPI communities. This year’s theme is Uniting NIH by Empowering People to Advance Equity.
Simply stated, diversity strengthens NIH. Celebrating the many achievements within the AAPI community serves as another opportunity to showcase the power and importance of equity and inclusion across the workforce. NIH employees collectively strive to fulfill the mission of enhancing health, lengthening life, reducing illness, and equalizing disabilities; accomplishing that goal would be much harder to achieve without the AAPI community.
Over the last several weeks, the nation has relied on the incredible contributions from the diverse NIH community; it is important to continue the facilitation of an equitable working environment as the nation pulls together in the midst of a pandemic.
To learn about some of the achievements from the AAPI community and to better understand the critical roles they’ve played in advancing medical research at NIH, I encourage you to visit the EDI website and follow the Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Sincerely yours,
Debra Chew, Esq.
EDI Director
