The NIH Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is pleased to invite you to attend the inaugural EDI Forum, “Unity in Diversity: Building a Stronger NIH Community through DEIA,” on October 8-9 at Natcher Conference Center from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. EDT. Attendees will be able to participate in discussions, workshops, and experiential activities aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) at the NIH. Areas of learning include information about the equal employment opportunity (EEO) complaint process; inclusive writing; data analytics; DEIA principles; reasonable accommodation basics; and other topics.

Through this event, we aim to cultivate empathy, build bridges, and empower individuals to become change agents in their respective institutes or centers. We will explore how embracing diversity not only enriches our work environments but also drives innovation, resilience, and collective progress. EEO and DEIA are critical scientific imperatives that allow the agency to achieve its goal of turning discovery into health. Join us as we champion unity in diversity and work towards building a stronger NIH community through DEIA.

Why Attend the EDI Forum?

  • Opportunity to participate in trainings on the discrimination complaint process, DEIA principles, the reasonable accommodation process, data analytics, and other related subject areas.

  • Learn how EDI is highlighting NIH senior leadership’s demonstrated commitment to creating a model EEO program and a discrimination-free workplace.

  • Understand how EDI’s mission, principles, and goals align with the overall NIH mission.

The EDI Forum is a Three-Phase Event:

Foundation Phase – The foundation phase will frame the event by showcasing NIH senior leadership’s support of EDI. The forum will begin with a message from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Health and Human Services, and NIH senior leadership. The opening session is available to all NIH staff. There will be a plenary session for managers and supervisors only.

Introduction Phase – Participants will have the opportunity to meet EDI staff, interact with NIH Employee Resource Groups, increase awareness of available assistive technologies, and receive information at various table stations.

Education Phase – EDI will offer presentations and trainings in key topics and focus areas. Some courses will provide credit toward NIH mandatory EEO training and supervisory continuing education requirements. They will be divided into three tracks:

  • EEO Compliance

  • DEIA

  • Program Evaluation and Policy

We request that you hold October 8-9 on your calendar. Registration details are forthcoming. If you have any questions, please email Pam Oliver at poliver@od.nih.gov.
